CALLING ALL FRIENDSWOOD RESIDENTS TO THE NEW FRIENDSWOOD ACADEMY!

Ever wonder how our city is run? Come and join our new Friendswood Academy.  This 8-week program will get an exclusive look into the workings of every city department! You will gain insider knowledge, meet our city leaders, and see first-hand how Friendswood operates and works for you.  Classes will be held on Tuesdays, 6-8pm, and a light dinner will be provided.

Spots are limited, so hurry and submit your application today! Applicants must be Friendswood residents, be at least 18-years of age, have your own transportation, pass a criminal background check and commit to attending and participating in the classes.  Applications will be received November 1, 2025 through December 31, 2025 in the City Secretary's Office via email to citysecretary@friendswood.com or by mail/in person to the Attention of the City Secretary, 910 S. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, Texas 77546.

Guidelines for Volunteer Committees, Boards & Commissions

It is the desire and intent of City Council to encourage and support citizen participation in an advisory capacity governing the affairs of the City. Service through membership on a committee, board or commission is a valued, important opportunity for participation in an advisory capacity.  

Individuals interested in volunteering can submit an online Application to volunteer to the City Secretary Office for further processing.  For more information on the City's various committees, boards and/or commissions, please see the summaries and membership of each listed below.  

Required Training

After appointments are declared, official board members must complete the following: 

• Statement of Officer
• Oath of Office
• Open Meetings Act Training
• Public Information Act Training

4th of July Steering Committee

The purpose of the Fourth of July Steering Committee is to organize, plan, coordinate, and oversee the annual City of Friendswood 4th of July activities and any other related functions requested by the Council.

Charter Review Commission

The Charter Review Commission is appointed by the Council approximately every five years and inquires into the operation of the city government under the Charter provisions, determines whether any such provisions require revision and perform such other duties as set forth in Section 11.09 of the Friendswood City charter.

Construction Board of Adjustments & Appeals

The Construction Board of Adjustment and Appeals shall have the power to hear appeals of decisions and interpretations of the building official and consider variances of the technical codes.

Friendswood Downtown Economic Development Corporation

The Friendswood Downtown Economic Development Corporation (FDEDC) is a Type B corporation that may undertake projects as described in Subchapter C of Chapter 501 of the Local Government Code and Chapter 505 of the Local Government Code. Friendswood Public Library Advisory Board

The purpose of the Library Advisory Board of the Friendswood Library is to establish general library policy, represent the public and its interest in the operation of the library, secure from the people of Friendswood support for the library, and to interpret the needs of the people of Friendswood to the City Council.

Investment Committee

It is the duty of the Investment Committee to review the investment practices of staff and ensure these are in accordance with the Investment Policy.

The mission of Keep Friendswood Beautiful is to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the City and to encourage residents to take an active role in maintaining its image.

Senior Citizens Advisory Committee

The Senior Citizens Advisory Committee acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council in all matters pertaining to Friendswood’s Senior Citizens Program.

Zoning Board of Adjustments & Appeals

The Zoning Board of Adjustments and Appeals hears and rules on requests for appeals, special exceptions, and variances to the Zoning Ordinance and authorizes variances from the Zoning Ordinance when not contrary to the public interest.
