About - Director of Public Works

Rene’ Ibarra became the Director of Public Works in early 2019. Ibarra’s private sector career started within the construction/remodeling/maintenance field and then transitioned to the refinery/petrochemical field. Rene initially began his public sector municipal career in League City, TX in 1998, and has held a variety of positions in local government Public Works, Building, Capital Projects, Community Development, and Engineering. In 2006, he joined the City of Friendswood as a Project Manager, and he was promoted to Projects-Development Manager in 2009 and then to the Community Development Department Deputy Director shortly thereafter. Following that, he was then promoted to the Deputy Director of Public Works in early 2014.  

Rene has a Master’s Certificate in Project Management from the University of Houston (UH) Clear Lake, and also a Public Manager Certificate from the University of Houston’s William P. Hobby Center for Public Service of Texas State University. He also has dual Associates degrees from San Jacinto College. Rene is also a Certified Flood Plain Manger through the Texas Floodplain Management Association.

Ibarra has grown up within the adjacent League City area since 1978. Rene is a proud father to his two children, and is also honored to being an uncle as well. As a family, inclusive of his own parents, brother and sister-n-law, they enjoy various school activities, traveling, fishing, hunting, camping, swimming, cooking, spending time with extended family, and sports….. most definitely soccer!
