Paying City bills with a credit card will cost more

Friendswood City Council has approved passing on credit card fees incurred when paying city services to the credit card user.

In Fiscal Year 2016-17, credit cards were used by customers in almost 33 thousand transactions with the City. As a result, the City paid approximately $100,000 in credit card fees. Most of those transactions were utility payments.

Beginning in early April, people using credit cards to pay utility bills, or any other city fees (recreation fees or court fees, for example) will have 2.5 percent of the amount added to their payment total. The effect is that credit card users will now pay the credit card fee to help offset the expenditure in the City’s budget.

Customers can avoid the credit card fee by paying with cash, check, or in the case of utility bills, setting up an automatic draft from their checking or savings account.

If you have questions about your utility payments, please call the City of Friendswood Utility Billing Office at 281-996-3232. For other City departments, please call 281-996-3200.
