Harold Benson receives Library’s Outstanding Programming Award
One of the Friendswood residents who helped men land on the moon is being recognized fifty years later for his efforts to educate new generations of people about that effort. Harold Benson is the recipient of this year’s Friendswood Library Outstanding Programming Award.
Mr. Benson was in charge of Apollo missions lunar landing and docking systems, among many other prominent roles during his NASA career. Last year, he led the planning and execution of a month-long series of discussions that celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. Events were held at the Library and other locations throughout the city. Mr. Benson was instrumental in bringing together retired astronauts, flight directors, engineers, NASA employees and their family members to discuss Apollo 11 and Friendswood’s unique role in getting the first men to the moon.
“In 2014, the Friendswood Library established an annual award to recognize an individual for their contribution to the provision of outstanding educational or cultural programming,” said Matthew Riley, Library Director. “We are proud to present the 2020 Outstanding Programming Award to Mr. Benson and recognize his years of contributions to the Library and our community.”
