James Toney became the Parks and Recreation Director on March 1, 2008. Toney began his municipal career with the City of Houston, TX in 2004 as the Youth Sports Program Manager. As Program Manager, Toney was directly responsible for daily programing designed for ten (10) Community Centers in the Southeast Houston Region. In 2005, he joined the City of Friendswood as Recreation Coordinator of the Parks and Recreation Department, and was promoted to Director of Parks and Recreation shortly thereafter.
Toney has a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Administration from the University of Tulane and a Master of Business Administration from American Intercontinental University. Toney enjoys every aspect of the job, particularly his involvement with the residents of Friendswood at various community programs and special events.
Toney and his wife Joyce have three sons, Justin (New York), Jonathan (Mississippi) and Branson. As a family, they enjoy traveling, spending time with extended family, and attending as many sporting events as possible, especially the New Orleans Saints football games.
