Friendswood Drive medians make-over begins

The volunteers at Keep Friendswood Beautiful (KFB) are alerting residents that Friendswood Drive (FM 518) medians will be in an eight-month transformation, beginning this week.
After receiving the $210,000 Governor's Community Achievement Award from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) last summer, KFB decided the best use of the grant money was to upgrade the Friendswood Drive medians, from the Pearland City limit to Stevenson Park. The committee voted to give them a look similar to the FM 2351 medians.
"Because we had a plan prepared, our first meeting with TxDOT representatives went very well and the process started much quicker than we anticipated,” said Sherry Goen, KFB Chairperson. “We received approval from TxDOT last December.”
“Removing the current plants will take most of the spring and the new medians work will begin in the fall, with an estimated completion date of late October,” Goen added. Approximately 90 percent of the plants being removed from the medians will be replanted at the Sportspark and other city facilities.
"The 518 medians will be torn up much of the summer. It is not going to look very good down the middle of Friendswood, but please be patient, because by this time next year, they are going to be beautiful," Goen said.
The completed medians will have new vegetation, decorative rock, and irrigation. The cost of the medians design, new plants and irrigation materials are paid for by the Community Achievement Award, funded by TxDOT.
"Working with TxDOT landscapers has been a wonderful experience. They helped us plan the process of adding irrigation in one of the medians, and completing some other medians we thought we would not be able to do," Goen said.
