Senior Citizen Program


The focus of the Senior Citizen Program is to enable individuals to continue being an integral part of their community, while keeping their dignity and sense of well being. The goal of FSCP is to enrich the lives of senior adults in Friendswood. Activities, programs, trips, etc. are all a vital part of this program.

    

 



Transportation Info

Bus service is available for seniors who want to come to the Senior Citizen Program for activities and lunch. Seniors must call a day ahead to schedule a ride on the bus. Contributions are accepted and appreciated for this service.

FSCP Activities, Trips & Special Events

Friendswood seniors may participate in a variety of activities, trips and special events creatively designed to meet the ever changing needs and interests of a growing and active adult population.  Everything from Tai Chi to Ballroom Dancing, line dancing, tap dancing or fitness instruction is offered on the weekly activities calendar.  Most classes are taught by volunteer instructors.  Special events offfered each month range from holiday celebrations to live entertainent performances by local and regional artists, lectures  and instructors.  Field Trips scheduled monthly and throughout the year include short day trips to area attractions as well as exciting and professionally organized overnight trips and excursions to near by cities and tourist destinations.  For details about current activities and events click on the link below to access the current edition of  the Senior Program newsletter and calendar.

Activites,trips and special events are for senior citizens only and may require an R.S.V.P. at (281) 482-8441. All field trips leave from the Activity Building, 416 Morningside.  Trip tickets and special event ticket sales begin the first of each month and are sold on a first come first serve basis.  SEATING IS LIMITED.

 



Activity Building Amenities


The Friendswood Activity Building, located at 416 Morningside Drive, is home to the Friendswood Senior Citizen Program.  The building, formerly the Friendswood Library has been completed renovated to accomodate the needs of a thriving active adult population and includes a fitness room, kitchen, Dining area, T.V. room, conference room, computer room, multipurpose room and an extensive library.  Additionally the facility is equipped with an ice machine, pool table and piano.  All seniors are welcomed and an encourage to use the amenities at their leisure when not otherwise in use by a class or event.



Volunteer Info

Volunteer opportunities are available to anyone who can share some time, talent, and skills on a daily or weekly basis. Volunteers are needed in all the programs. The continuing goal is to recruit volunteers to help in the following areas: classes/activities in the program, spending time with a shut-in to relieve family members from stress of constant care giving, small home repairs, grocery shopping and other related errands.



Senior Citizen Advisory Committee

Statement of Purpose: To enhance and enrich the quality of life for senior citizens who live in Friendswood. The Committee promotes health, well being, and independence through recreation, creative activity, support services and information.

Policy Objectives: The Committee shall advise the City Council on and assist staff with the following functions:

  1. Develop and implement an overall public awareness and information strategy regarding the senior citizen community and senior citizen services; 
  2. Develop information systems on resources which are now available to senior citizens and develop resources that could be available in the future; 
  3. Develop and implement programs and special events on an annual basis; 
  4. In cooperation with staff, develop annual goals and objectives for the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee to be submitted to City Council.

Qualifications for S.C.A.C. Committees: Members must be Friendswood residents.  All persons interested in serving on the S.C.A.C. committee shall submit completed form to the City Secretary. Forms are located at the City Secretary office. Members serve without compensation.

Membership: The committee consists of seven (6) members, five (5) regular, one (1) alternate appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council for terms of two years, overlapping terms.

Meeting Dates and Time: The second Tuesday of each month, at 9:00 a.m. in the Conference D room of the Friendswood Activity Building, 416 Morningside, Friendswood, Texas 77546.
