FM 518 Drainage Improvements to Begin Monday, March 1

Stonesthrow Avenue to Spreading Oaks

Spreading Oaks can now be accessed by both north bound and south bound traffic from FM 518.  The signal at this intersection is in recall, which means that cross traffic (those vehicles on Spreading Oaks) will signal the controller of waiting traffic.  After this happens, and the side traffic is allowed to pass, it will cycle the left turn arrows on FM 518.  All the lights will be on a timed cycle until the new asphalt is installed and the new loop detectors for both left turn lanes are replaced.  At that time the signals will be set back to their original patterns.  During the course of the next couple of weeks, alternate lanes may be temporarily closed due to the contractor installing the branch lines and new inlets along FM 518.  This will occur on both sides of FM 518 from Stonesthrow Avenue to West Willowick Avenue.

E. Castlewood Avenue to Echo Lane

Beginning Monday morning, August 2, 2010, there will be a traffic pattern change on FM 518 due to the on-going drainage project. The limits of the change will be from south of Castlewood to just past Echo Lane. Concrete traffic barriers will be removed from the median at Castlewood to just past the Sonic driveway allowing use of both lanes in each direction. The south bound left turn lane will remain closed at E. Castlewood, as the contractor is installing a new manhole at that intersection (Castlewood Traffic Control Plan2). This work will require that the right northbound lane be closed from just before E. Castlewood to just after E. Castlewood. Once this manhole is installed and the concrete paving finished up to Castlewood, the roadway will be opened to two way traffic and the temporary exit through Quaker Landing will be removed.

A couple of residents have called and inquired about the timing of the traffic lights at Castlewood and Spreading Oaks. As approved by TxDOT, the signal’s timing was adjusted to allow FM 518 traffic to move freely, with no left turns at either signal (except north bound at Castlewood) and to break the sequence when a vehicle approaches on a side street. Once the project is complete with new asphalt, new vehicle loop detectors will be reinstalled, and the traffic timing will revert back to the way it was before construction started.

The City will continue to keep residents updated on the City of Friendswood website, the City’s information board at Stevenson Park, and the City’s e-mail notification system. Questions concerning this project can be directed to City of Friendswood Project Manager George Cherepes, at (281) 996-3200.

Melody Lane Street Improvement Project

This project is currently in the design phase. The consulting engineer and the surveyor are gathering data and geotechnical information. Adjacent residents and individuals utilizing Melody Lane will see personnel applying stakes and flags along the right-of-way. Please be advised these stakes and flags are used in the design phase to establish locations of existing property lines, easements and utilities. As the project progresses, updates will be provided accordingly. For more information please call (281) 996-3200.

Capital Projects Underway:

  • Deepwood Lift Station Replacement - Development along the northern and central portions of Friendswood is putting an increased strain on the City’s already dated system. Constant repair and growth, attributable to new development, has made this lift station reach the end of its useful life. The new lift station is designed to address all future requirements up to build-out of the City. N & S Construction, the City’s contractor, has completed sinking the wet well and is currently placing the concrete floor. The yard piping is almost complete and the above ground piping for the lift station is to begin in July. Project Manager: George Cherepes

  • Deepwood Force Main Replacement - Along with the lift station, capacity to move sewage to the Gulf Coast (Blackhawk) Wastewater Treatment Plant also needed to be replaced and increased in size. The installation of this new line will increase capacity flow to the Gulf Coast Wastewater Treatment Plant and replace the existing force main that has outlived its usefulness. Currently Janco Directional Drilling, the contractor installing this new line, has installed the first 3,000 feet of 22” pipe from Public Works to just the other side of FM 528. Project Manager: George Cherepes
